A key element of the scheme is the fostering of community involvement in the sites. The Trust has signed a service-level agreement with Rushcliffe, under which it will provide conservation, estate management and educational advice and support around the Borough and in particular at four priority wildlife sites. The RBC / NWT agreement defines a set of clear objectives by which the effectiveness of the work of the Trust's staff can be monitored. The funding provided by RBC is sufficient to support an aver- age of twelve hours per week of staff time. The chosen sites are not at present being effectively man- aged, but all have potential for community involvement by for example establishing Friends Groups, running work parties, or for local schools to use as a learning resource on wildlife and habitats. The four sites are: The Hook, an area of floodplain between Lady Bay and the River Trent. An initial assessment here revealed signs of a water vole population and significant potential for grassland habitat work. Sharphill Wood, between Edwalton and the A52 ring road, contains a small colony of Early Purple Orchids. It has been `ringfenced' as a wildlife haven in the latest version of the Rushcliffe Housing Plan. One of the first actions here in March will be to fell spreading sycamore trees, in addition the Local Group will be leading a site visit in May (see back page). Funding from WREN Landfill Tax is being used to produce a management plan and carry out work in the next three years. Meadow Covert is a small woodland plantation and is used by a neighbouring school for wildlife study. Work will concentrate on getting greater diversity into the understory and developing the site's educational potential. The Green Line is part of the old Nottingham to Melton railway through West Bridgford. Originally established by an independent local group, this site has been somewhat neglected in recent years and had become overgrown. Clearance of scrub has been undertaken as part of creating a cycle track along it. The RBC/Trust team will concentrate on the re-establishment of an effective management group and ensuring a fragment of species rich grassland is maintained. In addition, time will be spent promoting wildlife education in schools and giving land management advice in the Borough. Although the time funded is limited it represents a most useful start and is certainly better than most Boroughs in the County. If you would like to get involved in any of these projects please contact Gaynor Jenkins-Jones at the Trust on 0115 9588242.
